DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the Local Organising Committee\, and after the gre
 at success of the 47th EASD Annual Meeting held in Lisbon in 2011\, it is 
 an honour to welcome this major scientific event back to our city in 2017.
  Lisbon\, Europe’s second oldest capital\, once home to the world’s gr
 eatest explorers\, offers a wide variety of options to explore: wonderful 
 architecture\, magnificent monuments\, a rich history\, vibrant cultural l
 ife and great natural sightseeing opportunities.\n\nSurrounded by beaches\
 , mountains and the countryside\, it is a historic capital\, a potpourri o
 f unusual character and charm\, an amalgam of 800 years of cultural influe
 nces mingled with modern trends and lifestyle\, creating intricate and spe
 ctacular contrasts. It is the birthplace of the world’s first diabetes a
 ssociation – the Portuguese Diabetes Association. Founded in 1926 by Ern
 esto Roma\, today it is a national and international model for diabetes ca
 re.\n\nThe EASD Annual Meeting will take place in the Parque das Nações\
 , at the International Fair of Lisbon (FIL)\, a former industrial zone\, i
 t was entirely rebuilt for Expo 98 with excellent access to downtown and t
 he airport. The sessions will take place at the FIL and in the adjacent ME
 O Arena with the meeting starting with Symposia on 11 September and the Op
 ening Session on the morning of Tuesday\, 12 September. Always a rewarding
  meeting\, with opportunities to make new contacts\, meet old friends and 
 stimulate creative exchange\, we look forward to welcoming you in Septembe
