Dear Colleagues
On behalf of the organising committee, I am delighted to invite you to the 40th European Congress of Cytology, to be held in Liverpool, England, from 2-5th October 2016. The meeting, organised and hosted by the British Association for Cytopathology, will, we hope, appeal to everyone whatever their background or interest in the field of cytology, from Europe and beyond. It will be an opportunity to learn of new developments, share best practice, refresh our skills but also to meet old friends.
The scientific programme will cover all aspects of cytology, with sessions covering morphology, best practice, guidelines, and new techniques. We will also be including how we, as cytologists, fit into the overall patient management and will include sessions with clinical colleagues and also a patient perspective where we can. The programme will include hands on microscopy workshops, as well as more interactive digital slide sessions. We will use interactive voting pads in some symposia, allowing the audience to directly interact with the session. We will also have some more interactive sessions covering more practical aspects of cytology such as aspiration techniques. A large open poster area, which also will house the many commercial stands and refreshment breaks, will allow delegates to meet and mix easily.
The venue is a modern, purpose built conference centre situated on the water front of the iconic River Mersey. A short walking distance from the main city centre, the venue is well served by many hotels in the immediate area, most again within easy walking distance of the conference building. A conference dinner will be held, also on the riverfront, during the meeting, with Beatles themed musical entertainment!
Liverpool is largely known worldwide as the birthplace of the Beatles and for its two Premiership football teams, Liverpool and Everton, but it is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was European City of Culture (2008). The Beatles influence can be seen in many venues and tours, including a Beatles Story exhibition, which many delegates will no doubt take the opportunity to experience if they can during their stay in Liverpool. The city centre provides first class shopping opportunities, and with easy access to other parts of the UK such as the Lake District and Wales, we are sure delegates will want to come early or stay on after the meeting to explore these even more.
